Nothing But Time in the Nearctic
Waterford Stable’s Summation Time (In Summation) has raced in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Florida and Pennsylvania in his young career and gets another stamp on his passport when he ventures north of the border as a live chance in Sunday’s GII Nearctic S. at Woodbine.
A maiden winner against $40,000 company at Belmont a little more than a year ago, the $250,000 OBS April graduate–the most expensive of his sire’s 30 juveniles to sell in 2013–defeated Bye Bye Bernie (Bernstein) in a Gulfstream allowance in April and has seen only stakes company since. Unplaced in the Karl Boyes Memorial S. over the Presque Isle Tapeta June 15, he was third to the late Shore Runner (More Than Ready) and Spring to the Sky (Langfuhr) in a Belmont allowance July 3 and was most recently the half-length runner-up to that in-form runner in the Troy S. at Saratoga Aug. 22. He should enjoy a good trip from the inside post, though he may require some racing luck.
Sweet Luca (Candy Ride {Arg}) makes his graded stakes debut at the age of six. The Illinois-bred, who twice defeated champion Work All Week (City Zip) in restricted stakes on the Arlington Poly, narrowly missed in the Black Tie Afffair S. for Illy-breds Aug. 8, but cutback to 6 1/2 grassy panels and registered a 13-1 upset in the Kentucky Downs Turf Dash Sept. 14, with Bye Bye Bernie not far away in third at 55-1.
Cyclogenisis (Stormy Atlantic) is arguably this race’s toughest read as he faces older rivals for the first time in his career. Perfect in his first three career tries for owner Matt Schera, the gray was a never-in-it 14th behind Muhaarar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the inaugural G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot and found plenty of traffic trouble in his one run since, a fourth in the 5 1/2-furlong Quick Call S. at Saratoga Aug. 6. He finished with interest and galloped out strongly, so the extra sixteenth of a mile of the Nearctic could work in his favor.
